If you’re running deliveries in any of those cities during summer evenings, you are working in some of the most lightning-active terrain on the planet.
During the summer heat delivery season, afternoon and evening thunderstorms build rapidly — often within 30 minutes of a clear sky. That’s exactly the window when most delivery drivers are at peak activity, hitting the dinner rush between 5 PM and 9 PM. Houston, Dallas, and Miami consistently rank among the busiest gig delivery markets in the US and also among the most lightning-prone.
One of the most dangerous phenomena is what meteorologists call a bolt from the blue — a lightning strike that travels horizontally for 10 miles or more from the main storm cell, hitting areas where the sky may still look relatively clear. You can be standing in a parking lot in what appears to be calm conditions and still be within striking range. By the time you see lightning directly overhead, you are already in danger. Early warning is everything.

The Rubber Tire Myth: What Actually Keeps You Safe in a Vehicle
Let’s settle this once and for all: your rubber tires do not protect you from lightning. This is one of the most persistent myths in storm safety, and believing it could cost you your life.
What does protect you inside a standard enclosed vehicle is the Faraday cage effect. When lightning strikes a hard-topped metal vehicle, the electrical current travels around the outside of the metal body and dissipates into the ground — largely bypassing the passengers inside. A properly constructed car or truck offers relatively good protection during a direct strike.
But that protection comes with a critical condition: you must not be touching any metal surface connected to the vehicle’s frame when a strike occurs. No hands on the steering wheel. No arm resting on the window frame. No fingers on the door handle. Keep your hands in your lap, avoid contact with any metal interior surface, and keep the windows fully up. The current routes through the vehicle’s metal body — if you’re bridging any part of that path, you become part of the circuit.
This protection applies only to hard-topped, metal-roofed vehicles. If you’re delivering on a motorcycle, a bicycle, an e-bike, or a scooter — you have zero Faraday cage protection. Convertibles with soft tops offer significantly reduced protection. If you drive a pickup truck and you’re standing outside loading groceries when lightning approaches, you are just as exposed as someone standing in an open field.
For motorcycle and bicycle couriers: if you hear thunder at all, stop immediately. Get off the bike, move away from it — metal objects can attract strikes — and get inside the nearest solid structure. If no structure is available, move to a low-lying area away from tall objects, squat low on the balls of your feet, and minimize your ground contact. Do not lie flat. Do not shelter under trees.

The 30/30 Rule: Your Most Important On-Shift Guideline
The 30/30 rule is the simplest and most reliable framework for lightning safety, and it should become automatic for every driver working through storm season:
First 30 — Flash to Bang: Count the seconds between a lightning flash and the following thunder. Sound travels approximately one mile every five seconds. If your flash-to-bang count is 30 seconds or fewer, lightning is within six miles of your location — close enough to be at real risk. Get to shelter immediately.
Second 30 — Wait After Last Thunder: After you hear the last rumble of thunder, wait a minimum of 30 minutes before returning to outdoor exposure. Lightning can continue to strike in an area even as the main storm appears to be moving away. This trailing-strike window is when a lot of people get hit — they see the rain lighten up, assume it’s safe, and get caught by a rear-flank strike. Thirty minutes is not optional. It’s the standard.
If you see lightning but the thunder is too faint to hear clearly, the storm is still far enough away that you have a brief window to act. Don’t spend that window standing outside watching the sky. Use it to get into your vehicle or a building, open your radar app, and start counting as the storm gets closer.

When to Pull Over and Stop Delivering Mid-Shift
The financial pressure to push through bad weather is one of the defining stresses of gig work. When the storm hits, part of your brain is doing math on missed orders. Here’s how to override that reflex with a clear, non-negotiable decision framework:
Stop accepting new orders and pull over when:
- Your flash-to-bang count drops below 30 seconds
- You receive a NOAA Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) for a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning covering your area
- Driving visibility drops to the point where you cannot safely navigate — heavy rain can reduce visibility to near zero within seconds
- You’re on a motorcycle, bicycle, or scooter and can hear thunder at all
- Local emergency management in your city — Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix — issues a shelter-in-place advisory
On DoorDash: You can pause your Dash from the main screen at any time without penalty. If you’re mid-delivery and conditions become dangerous, contact DoorDash support through in-app chat and explain you are pausing for weather safety. Take a screenshot of any active weather alerts — this protects you if there’s any dispute about an undelivered order.
On Uber Eats: Go offline instantly from the app. Uber has deployed weather-based delivery pausing features in certain high-risk markets during extreme weather events, though availability varies by city. If you’re mid-trip and conditions deteriorate, contact support and document the situation.
On Amazon Flex: Contact support through the app if your block becomes unsafe due to weather. Weather-related exceptions exist within Flex policy, but you need to document the situation with screenshots of active alerts at the time.
On Spark (Walmart): You can unassign deliveries or contact support when weather creates safety concerns. Spark’s driver terms include weather exception provisions — use them without hesitation when conditions warrant.

What to Do If You’re Caught Outside When Lightning Is Close
You’re walking from a restaurant to your car in Orlando, bag in hand, when the sky lights up and thunder cracks almost immediately. You’re in the open. Here is exactly what to do:
Get inside immediately. A solid building with plumbing and electrical wiring provides excellent protection — lightning grounds through those internal systems. The restaurant you just picked up from, a grocery store, a gas station — any enclosed structure counts. Do not stand in an open doorway or under an awning. Those positions do not provide meaningful lightning protection.
If no building is accessible, your hard-topped vehicle is your best alternative. Get in, close all windows, keep your hands in your lap, and do not touch any metal interior surfaces. Do not stay outside.
If you are completely caught in the open with no vehicle or building reachable: move away from tall objects — light poles, trees, your vehicle if you’re on a bike. Move away from other people clustered together, since lightning can arc between individuals in a close group. Do not lie flat on the ground. Use the lightning crouch: squat on the balls of your feet, feet together, head down, hands cupped over your ears. This position minimizes your contact with the ground — which can carry lethal ground current from a nearby strike — and protects your hearing from acoustic shock.
Do not shelter under trees under any circumstances. Trees are the single most common location of fatal lightning strikes in the United States. When lightning strikes a tree, ground current radiates outward along the roots and can kill or severely injure anyone standing nearby, even without a direct strike.
Lightning First Aid and When to Call 911
If you witness someone struck by lightning — whether it’s a bystander, another driver, or anyone near your delivery location — call 911 immediately. Don’t wait to see if the person gets up on their own. Get emergency services moving toward your location right away.
Here is the most important thing to know about lightning first aid: people struck by lightning do not retain an electrical charge after the strike. It is completely safe to touch and assist a lightning victim immediately after a strike. Do not delay help out of fear of secondary shock — there is none.
If the person is unresponsive and not breathing, begin CPR. Cardiac arrest is the leading cause of lightning-related death, and prompt CPR dramatically improves survival outcomes. If multiple people are struck simultaneously, prioritize those who are not breathing — conscious and alert victims have a better immediate prognosis and can wait.
Remember that about 90% of lightning strike victims survive, but survival is not the same as full recovery. Long-term effects reported by survivors include:
- Peripheral nerve damage and chronic pain syndromes
- Traumatic brain injury and cognitive impairment
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Hearing loss and inner ear damage
- Chronic fatigue and severe sleep disorders
- Personality and mood changes that can affect relationships and work

Critically, verify that emergency alerts are enabled in your phone’s notification settings right now. Weather Underground and The Weather Channel
Both services offer hyperlocal hourly forecasts and lightning probability data useful for pre-shift planning. During June, July, and August — especially if you’re working in Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Dallas, or Houston — it’s worth checking the hourly forecast before you start your shift. Afternoon storms in Florida and Texas can build from a clear sky to a full electrical storm in under 45 minutes.
FEMA guidance recommends identifying shelter locations along your primary delivery routes before storm season begins. If you run routes in Denver, Oklahoma City, or Chicago, knowing in advance where the nearest solid buildings are in each neighborhood gives you critical seconds when conditions change fast.
After the Storm: Downed Power Lines, Flooding, and Road Hazards
Once the 30-minute post-thunder window has elapsed and you’re ready to restart your shift, the risks don’t disappear — they change shape. Post-storm hazards cause significant injuries and fatalities every year among drivers who relax their guard too soon.
Downed Power Lines
Every downed power line you encounter must be treated as fully energized, regardless of how it looks. Do not drive over them. Do not exit your vehicle to move one. If a line falls across your car while you’re driving, stay inside, call 911, warn others to stay away by honking or calling out through a cracked window, and wait for the power company. Lines in contact with the ground can energize the surrounding soil in a radius large enough to kill or severely injure someone walking through it — even if the line appears dead.
Flooded Streets
Flash flooding is one of the deadliest post-storm hazards in the United States. Just six inches of moving water can knock an adult off their feet. Twelve inches of moving water can carry a small car off a road entirely. Apply the turn-around, don’t-drown principle without exception: if you cannot see the road surface beneath standing water, choose an alternate route. In Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta — cities with well-documented flash flooding problems — this is not a suggestion, it’s survival math. No delivery address is worth getting swept off a flooded road.
Debris and Damaged Infrastructure
Thunderstorms strong enough to generate significant lightning are capable of bringing down tree branches, scattering debris across roads, and damaging traffic signals and signage. Drive at reduced speed on residential streets after a storm, particularly in neighborhoods with mature trees. Treat any non-functioning traffic signals as four-way stops. Report significant debris blocking roads through your city’s 311 app or non-emergency line.
